Greetings from NYC. Tomorrow is the first official day of meetings inside the UN for the 57th Commission on the Status of Women.
WHAT I'M DOING HERE
I am in a delegation of about 30 women and one man, (my partner Duane). We are mostly sponsored by 2 main NGOs, Earth Child Institute and International Public Policy Institute. (More about these two organizations below.)
We are also joined by founders and organizers of many other influential women's organizations such as The Millionth Circle, NGO Circle of Women, and Gather The Women.
We have women from Pakistan, Germany, Peru, Tanzania and all over the United States.
Tonight we had a very lively and inspiring dinner to get to know each other and celebrate the powerful energy of the circle. Jean Shinoda Bolen has passed out many copies of her book "Moving Toward the Millionth Circle" for us to pass out to delegates to spread the word about the 5th Women's World Conference. We are hopeful that this year a resolution will be brought forth within the UN for a 5th Women's World Conference to be held by 2015. In the past this resolution has been blocked by the USA and the EU, with their only excuses being that they support women's rights but don't have the money to back something like this now. It is clear that their reasoning is more "sinister" - meaning, they don't support 5WCW because they don't like the thought of powerful women behind closed doors visioning the future for the planet. The last World Women's Conference was in Beijing in 1995. You can read about that at this link:
The World Women's Conference's focus on:
"The empowerment and advancement of women, including the right to freedom of thought, conscience, religion and belief, thus contributing to the moral, ethical, spiritual and intellectual needs of women and men, individually or in community with others and thereby guaranteeing them the possibility of realizing their full potential in society and shaping their lives in accordance with their own aspirations."
(Point #12 of 38, in the Beijing declaration.)
In our delegation we are wearing pins with 5WCW on them and we will be speaking out all week to everyone we can to promote 5WCW.
On a more personal note:
It was very humbling today to walk through the security checkpoint at the UN Visitor's Entrance today, at 46th and 1st St, and stand in line with women from all over the world to get our Ground's Passes. I know why I'm here. Because ending all forms of violence against women and girls (the theme of this year's CSW), is very close to my heart having grown up in a family with domestic violence. But these women from Africa, the Middle East and Asia were in line to speak out against sex trafficking, genital mutilation, and rape as a form of political terrorism in their countries. They had traveled a long long way to be there. I had traveled 5 1/2 hours by plane from California. All of us have stories to tell. Just being there together felt deep - like deep ocean remembering deep Ancestral Powers deep Old Old Woman Wisdom deeeeeeeeeep..... How else can I explain?
Duane was with me. I got to the front of the line and handed in my forms and showed my passport. They took my photo and handed me a badge to wear around my neck. I'm official.
MARCH 4 : GLOBAL MEDITATION ON THE UN CSW
At 4pm EST Duane and I will be attending a meditation at the Nigerian Mission to inundate the proceeding of the next two weeks with LOVE and LIGHT!

The International Public Policy Institute is a Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) in consultative status with the United Nations' Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC) and Department of Public Information (DPI)
An unprecedented global shift is embracing our world, bringing the collapse of cherished certainties and institutions everywhere. There is no clear path for nurturing values upon which to create peace-building policies. The IPPI Vision is to understand this historical moment as a unique opportunity to work with citizens and governments in the ways needed now for peace-building international public policy. People everywhere are organizing for the kind of peace-building that includes all creation and the most vulnerable people of every country. We are a working part of them.
